Governors

Colonel John Henry Manners Sutton finished building the school in 1850. It was opened on July 7th by himself and the Rector, the Reverend Joseph Walker. The bricks for the school were made in the Averham and Kelham brickyards. Timber grown on the estate provided the doors. The wrought iron work on them, latches, handles, hinges and nails, were forged in the Averham smithy. The Lee family, skilled wood carvers, wheelwrights and joiners did much of the construction work.

The school was built for the children of the Manners Sutton Estate which was very large indeed and included the villages of Averham, Kelham, Staythorpe, Rolleston, Little Carlton and South Muskham. It also took in the Cattle Market in Newark; Farndon, Averham Park and Park Leys. From 100 to 120 children attended and were seated in galleries.

Mr James Cobham was the first Headmaster. He was appointed in 1850 and retired in 1902.

A new school was built to replace the original building and was opened in November 1966.

The old school was demolished in 1967.

A new Resources Room and Staff Room were opened in May 1994.

A new Classroom / Community Room was opened in April 2001. This room contains disabled toilet facilities including shower.

In 2006 a new office extension and Reception area was added to the front of the building. At the same time extensive refurbishment was undertaken to the staffroom and the Key Stage 1 toilet area. The Resources Room was also converted into a small teaching area.
